Beyond Ghibli
Every anime fan has an origin story - a moment where they sat up and asked, to no-one in particular, 'what is this?' This is one such story - a look at the anime of the early 2000s that made me fall in love with an entire medium, and changed my life forever. The anime that made me take my first steps Beyond Ghibli.

Rekindle the Light - How Studio Ghibli Inspired Tears of the Kingdom
Просмотров 74 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Tears of the Kingdom, like Breath of the Wild before it, wears its inspirations on its sleeve. In this video I look at the many ways the work of Studio Ghibli helped shape this duology, the themes they share, and the lessons they impart. Ultimately, this is a love letter to the Legend of Zelda - a series that shaped us all. This is a relatively spoiler-free video, containing plot elements only ...
The Rise of the Android - Time of Eve & Sing a Bit of Harmony
Просмотров 25 тыс.Год назад
There's a preoccupation in the library of director Yasuhiro Yoshiura, a theme that - over the years - he has approached from multiple different angles: the rise of the android. Whether focusing on the secret lives of robots or the joy a singing android can bring, he's explored our cold companions in fun, philosophical, but always entertaining ways. Are you enjoying the Time of EVE? Consider sup...
Josee, The Tiger and the Fish - Between the Beasts and the Sea
Просмотров 29 тыс.Год назад
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is an oft-adapted piece of writing. Originally penned by Seiko Tanabe and weighing in at only a handful of pages, its multiple iterations speak to a timeless importance. 2020s animated outing is a standout in that lineage, a beautiful picture that fully explores Tanabe's themes of a beastly society, the majesty of the ocean, and the Françoise Sagan of it all. Speci...
Because It's There - The Summit of the Gods
Просмотров 37 тыс.Год назад
The Summit of the Gods is many things - a treatise on the tenacity of the human spirit, a deep-dive into the most unfathomable parts of our psyche, and a stunning entry point into the library of legendary mangaka Jirō Taniguchi. But most of all, it is a simple question: why do we climb? This video is, more than anything, an homage to the climbing community, and that was only made possible by cr...
Golden Kamuy - The Spirit of Hokkaido

In the frigid tundra of Hokkaido, a violent hunt for gold is painting Japan's white north red. Satoru Noda's Golden Kamuy is a great many things - an exploration of native Ainu culture, a treatise on what war does to those that survive it and an explosive tour through history's broadest strokes. But most of all it's just a bloody good time spent with incredible characters. Ridiculous and heartf...

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is one of the greatest stories ever told. Beginning as a love letter to 80's classics and science-fiction staples, Vanillaware's wild opus quickly becomes something entirely unique. Girls on Fire - A Place Further than the Universe
Просмотров 32 тыс.2 года назад
A Place Further than the Universe has a lot to say about the human spirit in its succinct and sweet thirteen episode run. Its four leads are as indomitable as they are insecure, tackling a setting both brutally harsh and strangely romantic. But why do we do it? Why do we leave warmth and safety behind to leave fresh tracks in untouched snow? Inspirational and demanding, A Place Further than the...
Falling for Patema Inverted

It's easy to fall for Patema Inverted. The core conceit of its duelling gravities make for a bewitching stage, as does the boy-meets-inverted-girl narrative playing out upon it. 9:44 where did you get the isolated tracks? Also from 11:18 to 11:39 the info is wrong. Most tracks were not covered by the Beat Crusaders but from a mix of musicians from different bands, including guitarists and bassist from Typhoon24 or the singer from YKZ giving Chiba’s singing voice and Husking Bee’s singer giving Koyuki’s singing voice. All respective credits are in the cd booklet.

    • @BeyondGhibli

Hi! Firstly, our House Band recorded the isolated tracks here for use in this video! We also recorded a bunch of Beck covers which are used throughout the video. You can find them here : ruclips.net/video/nR13gS5rjCw/видео.htmlfeature=shared For your second point: there were two OSTs released for Beck, one with the original tracks from the artists you listed (known as the Keith OST) which are where the tracks came from originally. The second is the music used in the show, mostly re-recorded by the Beat Crusaders and the voice actors from the show (known as the Beck OST). From wikipedia: 'Beck: Animation Beck Soundtrack is the first soundtrack album for the anime adaptation of the Beck manga. It contains all the songs used in the anime (excluding instrumental background scores). Most of the music on this album was done by Beat Crusaders working with the characters' voice actors, but are credited to the series' fictional bands, such as Beck and The Dying Breed.'

It's funny a Brit talking about this. You are aware of the heavy British inspiration for much of Ghibli's storytelling and worldbuilding in quite a few of their movies (including Laputa, where the village at the start is literally based on a Welsh mining town), right? So, Britain inspiring Japan which then inspires Britain again.

I find it kind of funny that I bought Voices of a Distant Star on DVD before Shinkai ever had even a 2nd film on the market. When I found out he was working on a second film after Voices, I couldn't help but watch. I find it ironic that it was Your Name being the first film of his I've not watched and I've not watched any of his films after it either.. I saw every single one prior to that. Maybe it's just his popularity. I felt like I was no longer part of an exclusive club of fans.

strangely, reusing the same map from botw for totk makes perfect sense. In botw, link was wandering through a now unfamilar land and so we discover it along with him. now that he seems to have recovered all of his memories, Hyrule is no longer unknown to him, and our experience in botw wild means that it is no longer unknown to us.

I am delighted to hear that there's such an Earthsea fandom in Japan; these stories are indeed a gift, and an exquisitely beautiful gift. I grew up as a child in the 1970's, and read the first three books of the Earthsea cycle then. Eventually, Tolkien's work cemented my love for epic fantasy, but it was Ursula K. Le Guin that lit that fire first. Some of my own creativity was directly influenced by her work. I think Ursula K. Le Guin summed it up best in saying it was his movie, and not her books. I really need to see this thing in its entirety, but I was very unimpressed with the 'Sy-Fy' movie. The problem as I see it, is that whenever this saga gets tackled in media, everyone does THEIR version of Earthsea...they do NOT do Ursula K. Le Guin's version of Earthsea. As an author, I hold her in very heavy reverence alongside Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, and Lovecraft. You are NOT going to show anyone her characters and worlds better than she did. And there is of course also the issue of whitewashing the characters, which the Sy-Fy version also did. Earthsea deserves a wholly faithful big screen adaptation. It would be several movies, obviously, but we got our homage out for Tolkien, Carroll, Lewis, Burroughs post-2000. This can happen for Earthsea as well.

You know what had a strangely slice of life feel to it? The original season of Ranma 1/2. especially the filler scenes that focused on Akane's b-story more so than the original manga. As the first uncut anime I ever saw, all the way back in 1996, those moments struck me as odder than the magical transformations--there's an extended sequence of Akane and Ranma eating burgers and throwing wrappers at the trashcan, with elaborate shot compositions (a POV shot of Akane looking at her lap, another from behind one of the missed wrappers while Akane walks to it, bends down to pick it up, stands up, and then returns to her seat) and minimal cuts--but it also granted the show a grounded, palpable weight that was missing from pretty much every other animated show I had seen at the time, even the likes of BTAS. It was that portrayal of mundane, everyday life (in a show about a boy than can transform into a girl by being splashed with water), the audacity of shooting a scene as if it was live action, that initially hooked me on the medium of anime (it was not the only type I enjoyed, but it had an outsized influence on my tastes in anime, to the point that I've at times been too dismissive of more exaggerated and kinetic styles of anime like Studio Trigger's output, Yuasa's movies, and the bulk of battle shonen anime).

On watching this deeply personal and moving video on what anime means to you ,and how closely i related to it, I went to watch Elfen Lien again. I was apprehensive. When I watched Elfen Lied I was a mid-teen. And now being over a decade later I wondered if the pronounced edge would strike me as cringey and ruin the memory of a show I loved enough to make its intro my ringtone on my nokia brick phone. But no. Not only did I find Elfen Lied to be measured in it's depictions of taboos, be they depictions of violence and cruelty human hearts are capable of, or the unmastered sexual feelings of the characters not yet mentally matured enough to handle them. At it's core, dispite being a show about a fictitious human breed with implausible powers that frankly sound like they were listed out by an 11 year old on their tumbler blog (invisible, incorporeal, streachable, and entirely retractable arms that can deliver a virus andor rip metal bars apart) I found it ,more than the first time I watched it, to be a show about the deeply human need to feel belonging, and the cruelty people are capable of towards those they reject.

The moment that made me love this film was when Kumiko inspired Suneo to get on his feet both literally and symbolically with her fairytale. Not only was it a turning point for their relationship and the culmination for both of their characters (finding her feet in the world and standing up for somebody, not getting stood up for; inspiring him to fight for his dream because he gave her all his empathy, determination, and resolve to move steadily in life) -- it is also a beautiful meta-narrative statement, albeit an unintentional one. The power of dreams and stories is what propels forward not only the plot of Josee, but the entertainment industry, art, and, arguably, humanity itself. I love your essays Beyond Ghibli, they're like a good movie discussion with a friend after having it watched together :)

Both of your videos on Cowboy Bebop are incredibly well done, insightful, and a kick in the teeth. Just like the incredible show itself. There is nothing else like it out there, nor should there be. I don't acknowledge the existence of the live action thing carrying the name of this magnificent show. Never saw it; never will. I was fortunate to catch CB during one of it's early runs on Adult Swim, sometime around when the movie came out. There I was, in my late teens, flipping through the channels like the crew of the Bebop would often do. I found it just as an episode was starting with Tank! blasting in all it's mighty splendor. The episode in question was Ballad of Fallen Angels. To say I was immediately captivated would be a serious understatement. And while it was my introduction to anime, nothing has come close to matching it. Jin Roh & Ninja Scroll comprise the rest of my own triumvirate, but with a tremendous distance between them and Bebop on it's mountain top. I completely agree with your assessment that the show is perfect as is (the movie too) and nothing more needed or should've been added. Even back then, long before the way franchises are run into the ground, dug up, and run down again: I understood that this was a complete story, a symphony, that not only didn't need any addition but would've only been diminished by addition. If only more creative types had both the talent and restraint of Watanabe-San.

Jin Roh is an example of a movie that is impressively animated, but has a dreary, and depressing story that doesn't really have wide-audience appeal. And the story itself isn't even all that deep or profound like Ghost in the Shell, (which is full of Buddhist concepts). Jin Roh is a pretty straightforward romantic tragedy, that ends with an unhappy ending where the "hero" kills the woman he loves and then goes on to be a tool for the state. The uniform he wears has tons of Nazi symbolism as part of it, so it's basically like he's chosen to be the fascist tool, and that's how it ends. It's not exactly inspiring stuff that makes people want to watch it again and again. It's super-well animated, but I can't see a lot of people being like, "Hey all! For our anime movie night, lets watch Jin Roh! It'll be awesome!" It's not a fun watch, and leaves you feeling dreary and depressed afterwards.
